How Amazon.ca referral and FBA fees are calculated
An Amazon.ca sale fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) pays a referral fee on the sale price, an FBA fulfilment fee set by size tier and shipping weight, monthly storage by volume, and a holiday peak surcharge in season. Your selling plan adds a monthly subscription or a per-item fee. The calculator above shows each line so you can see which charge decides whether an ASIN is worth sending in. Amazon announced no change to Canadian referral and FBA fees for 2026 (announced change: $0.00), so the rates below are the ones in effect for the year.
Referral fee: the category rate or the minimum, whichever is higher
The referral fee is the category percentage of the total sale price, with a per-item minimum of $0.40 in categories that have one. At a 15% rate the minimum only bites below about $2.67, so it rarely matters for resale stock. Grocery and Gourmet, Media, Collectible Cards, Video Game Consoles and Video Games and Gaming Accessories have no minimum. Most general merchandise pays 15%: Toys and Games (15%), Home and Kitchen (15%), Sports and Outdoors (15%), Tools and Home Improvement (15%). Lower rates apply to Computers (8%), Consumer Electronics (8%), Video Game Consoles (8%) and Automotive and Powersports (12%). The highest is Amazon Device Accessories at 45%, which catches sellers who list a case or charger for an Echo or Kindle.
Amazon applies the referral rate to the total the buyer pays for the item, which on self-shipped orders includes the shipping you charge. The calculator applies it to the item price only, so for merchant-fulfilled orders with a shipping charge, add the category rate on that shipping amount yourself.
Price bands that switch the whole rate
Four categories change rate at a price point, and the new rate applies to the whole price, not just the part above it. That creates a cliff where raising your price lowers your payout:
- Clothing and Accessories: 10% under $20, 17% at $20 or more. A shirt at $19.99 pays $2.00 and nets $17.99; at $20.00 it pays $3.40 and nets $16.60. You need to price at $21.68 or more to beat $19.99.
- Baby Products and Beauty, Health and Personal Care: 8% up to $15, 15% over $15. An item at $15.00 nets more than the same item at any price from $15.01 to $16.23.
- Grocery and Gourmet: 8% up to $20, 15% over $20.
If a repricer is set to follow competitors across one of these lines, set its floor and ceiling so it does not land just above the band edge.
Categories charged by portion
Other categories charge a higher rate on the first part of the price and a lower rate on the rest, so there is no cliff:
- Electronic Accessories: 15% on the first $100, 8% above. A $150 accessory pays $15.00 + $4.00 = $19.00.
- Compact Appliances and Full-Size Appliances: 15% up to $300, 8% above.
- Furniture: 15% up to $250, 10% above.
- Jewelry: 20% up to $325, 5% above.
- Watches: 16% up to $1,500, 3% above.
FBA fulfilment fee: you supply the tier and shipping weight
Amazon sets the FBA fee from the size tier and the shipping weight, which is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. The size-tier definitions and the dimensional-weight divisor for Amazon.ca were on a Seller Central help page we could not read, so the calculator does not guess them. Instead it asks for the tier and shipping weight Amazon shows for the ASIN. You can find both in the Revenue Calculator in Seller Central or in the Fee Preview report once the item is in your catalogue. If you enter your own scale weight for a bulky item, the estimate will be too low.
| Standard tier, shipping weight up to | Fee | Envelope tier, up to | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g | $5.92 | 100 g | $4.46 |
| 200 g | $6.12 | 200 g | $4.71 |
| 300 g | $6.36 | 300 g | $5.01 |
| 400 g | $6.73 | 400 g | $5.28 |
| 500 g | $7.23 | 500 g | $5.62 |
| 600 g | $7.40 | ||
| 700 g | $7.71 | ||
| 800 g | $7.95 | ||
| 900 g | $8.25 | ||
| 1,000 g | $8.49 | ||
| 1,100 g | $8.58 | ||
| 1,200 g | $8.84 | ||
| 1,300 g | $9.04 | ||
| 1,400 g | $9.29 | ||
| 1,500 g | $9.60 |
Above 1,500 g, standard-size units pay $10.32 plus $0.09 for each 100 g above the first 1,500 g, up to 9,000 g. The calculator counts any part of 100 g as a full step, so a 2,340 g unit pays the base plus 9 steps: $11.13. The envelope tier stops at 500 g and the standard tier at 9,000 g; past either, the calculator warns you instead of guessing, because Amazon will assign a different tier.
Oversize tiers charge a base for the first 500 g plus a fee for each additional 500 g or part of it: small oversize $15.43 plus $0.46, medium oversize $37.78 plus $0.52, large oversize $82.20 plus $0.58, special oversize $150.78 plus $0.58. A 3,200 g small oversize unit pays the base plus 6 steps: $18.19. The jump from the top of standard to small oversize is large, so a product that sits on the border is worth re-boxing.
The standard bands are 100 g wide, and prep counts. A unit that weighs 880 g bare and 920 g after a poly bag and bubble wrap moves from the 900 g band ($8.25) to the 1,000 g band ($8.49). Weigh items as you will ship them.
Adjustments: low-price discount, peak fee, batteries
- Low-Price FBA: products priced under $14.00 get $0.80 off the standard FBA rate. The calculator applies it to envelope and standard tiers. A $12.99 Home and Kitchen item in a 150 g envelope pays $1.95 referral plus $4.71 less $0.80: $5.86 before storage.
- Holiday peak: from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027 Amazon adds a peak fulfilment fee. The figure we use, $0.39 per unit, is Amazon's published average increase, not the rate for your tier (Amazon announcement). Heavier and oversize units will usually pay more than the average. The calculator adds it automatically when the date is in the window; untick the box to see the January price.
- Lithium batteries and other dangerous goods: $0.11 per unit. Tick the box for anything with a battery inside or packed with it.
Storage, aged stock and refunds
FBA storage is charged per cubic metre per month: $40.00 for standard-size and $28.00 for oversize from January to September, rising to $77.00 and $49.00 from October to December. Volume in cubic metres is length x width x height in centimetres divided by 1,000,000. Q4 storage is close to double the rest of the year, so inventory that arrives in October and sells in February pays the high rate for every month it waits. The calculator does not include Amazon's aged-inventory surcharge; check the inventory age shown in Seller Central for units that have been in stock for months.
When you refund a buyer, Amazon returns the referral fee but keeps a refund administration fee: the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of the referral fee. On a $29.99 toy that is $0.90. For liquidation stock, returns carry a second risk: a returned unit that goes back into sellable stock and reaches the next buyer opened or used produces condition complaints, which hurt account health far more than the fee. Check FBA customer return dispositions and remove damaged units rather than letting them resell as new.
Selling plan
The Professional plan is $29.99 per month; the Individual plan charges $1.49 per item sold. At 20 items a month Individual is still cheaper; from 21 items Professional wins. Enter your monthly units in the calculator to spread the Professional fee across each sale; at 50 units a month it adds $0.60 per unit.
Sales tax on Amazon's fees
Amazon's fee invoices to Canadian sellers can include GST/HST. The calculator can show this as a separate line: pick your province and it applies the combined rate for that province, for example 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia or 5% GST in Alberta. Check the tax actually charged on your own fee invoice, since provincial tax treatment may differ from the combined rate shown. If you are registered for GST/HST, you can normally claim the GST/HST paid on these fees as an input tax credit, so it is a cash-flow cost rather than a lost margin. Leave the option off if you claim it.
Worked example: a $29.99 toy in October
These are the calculator's default inputs: $29.99, Toys and Games, standard tier, shipping weight 820 g, box 30 x 23 x 10 cm, one month of October to December storage, peak period on, item cost $9.00, inbound freight $0.50, Professional plan not spread.
- Referral: 15% of $29.99 = $4.50 (above the $0.40 minimum).
- FBA: 820 g falls in the 900 g standard band, $8.25. No low-price discount at this price.
- Peak fee: $0.39.
- Storage: 30 x 23 x 10 = 6,900 cubic centimetres = 0.0069 cubic metres x $77.00 = $0.53. In January to September the same unit would pay $0.28.
- Total Amazon fees: $13.67. Profit: $29.99 - $13.67 - $9.00 - $0.50 = $6.82.
With Ontario selected for tax on fees, the calculator adds 13% of $13.67, or $1.78, which a registered seller claims back. On the same inputs Walmart.ca WFS comes out ahead for this item, mainly because the WFS fulfillment fee for a 3 lb shipping weight is lower than the FBA fee for the 900 g band; run the comparison page before you split a lot between channels.
FAQ
Where do I find the size tier and shipping weight?
Use the Revenue Calculator in Seller Central for the ASIN, or the Fee Preview report for items already in your catalogue. Enter that tier and weight here; the calculator does not work out tiers from dimensions.
Why does my Clothing item net less at $20 than at $19.99?
The rate moves from 10% to 17% at $20 and applies to the whole price. Stay at $19.99 or go to $21.68 or more.
Is the holiday peak fee exact?
No. $0.39 is Amazon's published average increase for October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027. Your tier and weight may pay more or less; the Revenue Calculator shows the per-ASIN amount.
Do I pay GST/HST on Amazon's fees?
Your fee invoice will show it. If you are GST/HST-registered you can normally claim it as an input tax credit, so leave the tax option off unless you are not registered.
Did Amazon raise Canadian fees for 2026?
No. Amazon announced no increase to Canada referral and FBA fees for 2026 (announcement). The rates on this page come from the Amazon.ca pricing page.
