How Walmart.ca and WFS fees are calculated

A Walmart.ca sale fulfilled by Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) carries up to four charges: a referral fee on the sale price, a WFS fulfillment fee per unit, monthly storage, and an oversize fee for large boxes. Your item cost, prep materials and inbound freight come on top. The calculator above shows each line separately so you can see which one decides whether an item is worth sending in.

Referral fee: a flat rate by category, no minimum

Walmart.ca charges a single referral rate per category on the sale price. There is no sliding scale by price and no per-item minimum fee listed, which matters for cheap items: on Amazon.ca a $2 item still pays a minimum referral fee, on Walmart.ca it pays the category rate and nothing more. Most general merchandise sits at 15%, including Toys & Games (15%), Home & Garden (15%), Kitchen (15%) and Sporting Goods (15%). The categories worth knowing because they are lower:

Jewellery is the one category above the general rate, at 20%. A common mistake is assuming an electronics item gets the electronics rate: Electronics Accessories (cables, cases, chargers) is billed at 15%, not 8%. The category that counts is the one your item is set up under in Seller Center, so check the product type on the item before you rely on a lower rate. The full category list is on the Walmart.ca referral fee page.

The calculator applies the referral rate to the item price only. If you ship an order yourself and charge the buyer shipping, compare the commission on your Seller Center payment report against the item price to see whether shipping was included in the base on your account.

Seasonal referral discounts with end dates

Walmart.ca is running two category promotions from October 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027: Toys get 100% off the referral fee, and Beauty gets 50% off. On a toy that means the referral line drops to zero for sales in that window. The calculator applies the discount only when the date is inside the window and the "Apply current seasonal referral promo" box is ticked. Untick it to see what the same item earns after January 3, which is the number to use if your stock will arrive late or sell slowly. A toy that only works with the promotion is a toy you need to sell before the promotion ends.

WFS fulfillment fee: shipping weight, not scale weight

The WFS fulfillment fee is charged per unit by shipping weight, worked out in four steps:

  1. Volumetric weight = length x width x height in inches, divided by 300.
  2. Take the greater of the unit weight and the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is ignored for units under 1 lb or over 150 lb; those are billed on unit weight alone.
  3. Add 0.25 lb for packaging.
  4. Round up to the next whole pound and read the fee from the table.

The rounding step creates sharp thresholds. Because 0.25 lb is added before rounding, any billable weight over 2.75 lb lands in the 4 lb row ($8.50 instead of $6.50), and anything over 5.75 lb lands in the 7 lb row ($10.10). If an item weighs 2.8 lb, a lighter inner box or dropping a manual from a multi-pack can move it down a full tier.

Volumetric weight is where liquidation stock gets caught. A 1.2 lb throw pillow in an 18 x 14 x 8 inch box has a volumetric weight of 2,016 / 300 = 6.72 lb. Add the allowance and it rounds to 7 lb, so it pays $10.10 rather than the $6.50 its scale weight suggests. Re-boxing returns and open-box items into the smallest carton that protects them is often the cheapest fee cut available, and it also lowers storage, which is billed on volume.

The WFS table, and where it jumps

Shipping weightFulfillment fee per unit
Under 1 lb$5.50
1 to 3.9 lb$6.50
4 to 6.9 lb$8.50
7 to 11 lb$10.10
Each lb over 11 lbplus $0.40
21 lb$18.00, then $0.40 per lb
31 lb$24.00, then $0.20 per lb
51 lb$28.00, then $0.20 per lb to 71 lb, $0.40 per lb from 71 to 150 lb
151 lb$150.00, then $0.40 per lb to 350 lb
351 lb$350.00, then $0.40 per lb to 500 lb

The fixed rows at 21 lb and 31 lb do not line up with the per-pound add-ons below them. Counting up from the 7 to 11 lb fee at $0.40 per pound, a 20 lb unit works out to $13.70; at 21 lb the table switches to $18.00. The same happens at 31 lb. The calculator applies the table literally, so you will see the fee jump when a unit crosses those weights. The largest step is at 151 lb, where the row is $150.00 (oversize fees no longer apply), far above what the 71 to 150 lb add-on reaches at 150 lb. If your invoices differ at these steps, trust the invoice.

Under 1 lb is the other grey area. Walmart's text says to add the allowance and round up to the nearest pound, which read strictly would push every unit to at least 1 lb and make the under-1 lb row unreachable. The calculator assumes the $5.50 row applies when unit weight plus 0.25 lb stays under 1 lb, which means a unit weight under 0.75 lb. Check this against the fee on your first WFS order for a light item before you build a pricing plan around it.

Oversize fees

For units up to 150 lb, Walmart adds an oversize fee based on dimensions. Girth is twice the sum of the two shorter sides.

The girth test catches boxes that do not look oversized. A 40 x 30 x 20 inch carton has no side over the tier 1 limits, but its girth is 100 inches and longest side plus girth is 140, which puts it in tier 2. A 36 x 24 x 12 inch box comes to 108 and pays tier 1. Measure the sealed carton, not the product, and include any bulge from overfilled boxes.

Storage: billed per cubic foot per month

WFS storage is volume times rate times months. Volume in cubic feet is length x width x height in inches divided by 1,728. The rates:

On a shoebox-sized item storage is small next to the fulfillment fee. It matters on bulky, slow sellers: a 3 cubic foot box that sits from September into December pays the peak add-on, and after a year the long-term rate can cost more per month than the item is worth. For anything that sells a few units a quarter, enter realistic months, and send in weeks of stock rather than the whole pallet.

Removal, disposal and the fuel surcharge

Removal and disposal fees are 100% off for all sellers until January 31, 2027. After that, disposal is $0.46 per unit at 2 lb or less, plus $0.26 for each pound over 2 lb (Walmart removal page). If you have dead stock in WFS, clearing it before the end date costs nothing. Separately, Walmart may add a fuel surcharge of up to 7% of the fulfillment fee if gas rises above $2 per litre; tick the fuel box in the calculator to see the worst case.

Existing sellers with high WFS penetration also get a fulfillment discount until January 31, 2027: 20% in the top penetration band and 15% in the band below it (the thresholds are on the WFS fees page). The calculator does not apply this because eligibility is account-specific; check Seller Center and reduce the fulfillment line by hand if it applies to you.

Worked example: a $29.99 toy

These are the calculator's default inputs: a $29.99 item in Toys & Games, unit weight 1.8 lb, box 12 x 9 x 4 inches, item cost $9.00, inbound freight $0.50 per unit, one month in storage.

  1. Referral: 15% of $29.99 = $4.50.
  2. Volume 12 x 9 x 4 = 432 cubic inches; volumetric weight 432 / 300 = 1.44 lb. Unit weight 1.8 lb is greater, so billable weight is 1.8 lb. Add 0.25 lb: 2.05 lb, rounded up to 3 lb. Fulfillment fee $6.50.
  3. Oversize: longest side 12, girth 2 x (9 + 4) = 26, total 38. No oversize fee.
  4. Storage: 432 / 1,728 = 0.25 cubic feet x $0.80 x 1 month = $0.20.
  5. Total Walmart fees: $11.20. Profit: $29.99 - $11.20 - $9.00 - $0.50 = $9.29.

Sold between October 5, 2026 and January 3, 2027, the toy promotion removes the $4.50 referral fee and profit rises to $13.79. If the unit instead sits past 30 days into the peak months, storage becomes 0.25 x ($0.80 + $1.70) = $0.63 per month. If the item weighed 2.8 lb instead of 1.8 lb, it would round to 4 lb and the fulfillment line would rise to $8.50.

FAQ

Is there a minimum referral fee on Walmart.ca?

None is listed on the Walmart.ca referral fee page. The fee is the category rate times the sale price, so a $4 item in a 15% category pays $0.60. The WFS fulfillment fee, at least $5.50 per unit, is what makes very cheap items unprofitable.

Why does my fee jump at 21 lb?

Walmart's table has fixed rows at 21 lb ($18.00) and 31 lb ($24.00) that sit above where the per-pound add-ons would reach. The calculator follows the published table, so a unit that rounds up to 21 lb shows the higher fee. See the WFS fees page.

When is the toy referral discount over?

The 100% toy discount and the 50% beauty discount both run from October 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Sales after January 3 pay the full 15% or 15%.

What does it cost to leave unsold stock in WFS for a year?

After 365 days storage rises to $7.00 per cubic foot per month, compared with $0.80 before that. Removal and disposal are free until January 31, 2027, so that is the cheapest time to clear aged units.
